I am trying to get better at posting information about my costumes, so here is my first costume post!

I made Nausicaa for NYCC. I have always been a huge Ghibli fan, but I recently read the manga that continues the story of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, and I fell in love. Nausicaa is my hero :) Its really worth a read!

I based the majority of the costume on her outfit in the manga because I prefer the more detailed tunic over the one from the movie.

Rifle

The handiwork of the amazing and talented MaxTheBird. The almost everything you see is carved from basswood. After she carved it, I painted the wood with a mahogany wood stain. MaxTheBird finished out the details with wood filler and a bit of Sculpey for the loading mechanism (and hot glue dots for the bolts) and then painted on the silver with Rub and Buff. I used an old purse strap for the shoulder strap, attached with wire.

Earrings and Tunic Gem

Sculpted in Sculpey and then painted with nail polish to make it shiny! I originally cast them in resin but resin never set. Yay for last minute substitutes!

Aviator Cap

Started with this pattern: cristophine.deviantart.com/art…
Made a couple of trial versions out of old tshirts until I got it just right with the little peak on the top. I used some thin plastic from a clear plastic box lid for the goggle lens. The buttons are Sculpey (this was my first time making a button hole with my sewing machine!!!!!!!!!!). I made it sorta huge because I ended up getting a wig since I don't have bangs.

Tunic

Modified this pattern: vintagepatterns.wikia.com/wiki…
I shortened the length - which I regret :( - messed around with the collar until it opened in the front but still stood up straight. I added some strips of fabric into the arm seams and then cut the strips and the bottom of the dress to make the fray. I painted the cut edges with Fray Block, but it left a fairly obvious stain so if you try this, be super light with it. The turtle/bird on the front is applique using silver ironing board fabric! I wrapped some cloth around a tube of chapstick to make the flare cartridge shape... and then I put chapstick in each little pocket! I am so prepared for dry lips!!!

Gloves

I sewed some little fabric rectangles to the backs of the hands. That glove material was super thick T_T

Teto

I cut tiny little holes into the feet and put a small neodymium magnet in each foot, and then sewed another four into the shoulder of the dress so he stays put when I'm busy :D

Belt and Bag

Belt: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I…
I can't remember what pattern I used for the bag anymore, but it really didn't turn out the way I wanted anyway. I used a brown felt and another Sculpey button. It was handy to have at conventions tho!

Leggings

Just some white spandex leggings I had lying around from my Amaterasu costume.

Boots & Boot Covers

Boots are just a dark brown calf high pair I already had. For the boot covers, I used two layers of a really thick suede I had left over from a different costume, and then covered that with the blue fabric to get it stiff enough to stand up around the boot. There is a piece of elastic that runs under the arch with Sculpey buttons on either side of the elastic.

I'm always happy to chat about the costume, so feel free to msg/comment!
